I know this video is over 8 years old but I have a tale I'd like to tell you of years ago.... First , as I write this, it's just now starting to be April, 2022... And this year I will be 62 years old. My late stepfather was 20 years retired Air Force (Security Sguadron)and lived many places before he and my mother married in 1964....I was born in 1960,my sister in 1962,followed by our baby brother in 1967 awhile dad was stationed at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo , Tx, where I live now. He was commissioned for a post overseas ( the Vietnam War was beginning it's worst time) and he chose to take a post at Iraklion AFB over one in Germany, which my mother was not happy about AT ALL! We arrived in June 1967 and if anyone were to ask me what an alien from another planet feels like visiting Earth , honestly I can tell you exactly what it must feel like to go to an entirely unfamiliar EVERYTHING country where it is nothing at all like what you've seen of home for a kid of 7 years old! It was so totally wonderful from day one , and we lived in a hotel on the beach near the center of Iraklion for 5 months or so until things settled a bit and we found a rent house off base. In case you wonder, the CretAquarium is now on the site where the Air Force Base and base housing used to be . .. my brother turned 1 year old in the hotel , and one day a family of "Gypsies" ( that's not being disrespectful, just the only term we were told by the Greek staff there to go by ) But right in front, in the rough dusty infancy area on front of the 6 story hotel they came with a huge brown bear on a heavy chain! The man holding him with a heavy chain and collar,and he played on a drum that hung around his waist to make music to which he instructed this huge upright standing brown bear to turn around and do his best to do a little dance show! I was hooked from them on , and I cherish so many mind blowing mories that I blessed to have oof living in a place that was as close to anything I think heaven must be like! As far as Chersonnissos is concerned, after my mother stopped complaining and groping and hauling home 5 gallon jugs of water several times a week on the shuttle bus- filled with "base water".. because she was SO sure that we would catch some sort of horrible parasite if we drank the tap water! And she finally stopped when we told her we'd been drinking it for months and we were still okay! She came to enjoy herself and loved Crete as much as we did after a while, and we eventually moved into base housing. But my memories of that next Summer .. we rented a Summer apartment near the beach in Chersonnissos and I can't believe how it looks in your video! I remember that was the "Summer 9f Love".. in 1969,and there was nothing but a small stretch of taverna's , restaurants and a promenade on a main sort of thoroughfare street that was maybe 3 blocks long on the water with a sort of cabana area seating right at the water where the many, many college students and wandering hippies gathered to visit and eat and play guitar etc! It was just a small village,then, a few apartment rentals available but totally laid back and it was a wonderful time! My sister and I were tanned, white haired beach kids, snorkeling for starfish and learning to embroider fliers on my jeans thanks to a sweet German student traveling the island... We had so many adventures and I STILL remember how wonderful and full of Thyme and oregano the air always smelled naturally! There are far too many great things I cod share a d perhaps I can write a great book now that I am retired! I fell in love with the entire and total dream life that was Crete as a child in the 60's... A truly incredible childhood! We lived off base not very far from the Palace of Knossos and one Summer we travelled ALL over the Island and I hiked down the Samaripa Gorge 20 miles with my G.Sckyt troop- and we drank water straight from the ice cold river that flowed like a gift from the Gods that was totally pure and clean from the mountain snows melting! It went through the entire length of the gorge! We climbed the scary steep,mysterious forested mountain goat path on one trip to reach the cave opening high up where it is said Zeus was hidden from his child eating father! There was a small upper cave and amazing stalactites and stalGmites6 dripping with cold melted snow runoff , slippery sandstone, damp and totally iconic!.. Crete is a remarkable and awe inspiring ace of ancient and eternal beauty, and thank you for the images that brought to mind so many memories of so many aces I can say that I was there and on that beach at one time! I still recognize the basic areas, and after 7 years , If we had not HAD to transfer back to the States after a family crisis, I would probably been quite content to stay there forever! And I never wanted to leave, and one day I will try to go back and be that wonderfully happy person in paradise once more . Maybe I'll just sit on the beach and paint my water oolors until I take my happy self on that last sunset across the blue waters and see the Dragon Island off in the distance...Crete IS SO much more than a vacation place,it is the human dawn of everything beautiful and incredible! Where it makes your mind at peace and belonging to the hills,grapevines,olive trees and just EVERUTHING of the loving soul craves!

I used to work in Hersonissos as a bartender couple of years,where i met a girl that is mother of my son now. I had unforgettable experience,its my second home! To all my Cretan brothers,cheers and greetings from Montenegro! One day i will get back and show my son my another home! Long live Hersonissos/Creta! 🇲🇪 🤝 🇬🇷
